The Manila Bulletin (PSEMB), (also known as the Bulletin and previously known as the Manila Daily Bulletin and the Bulletin Today) is the Philippines' largest broadsheet newspaper by circulation, followed by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. It bills itself as "The Nation's Leading Newspaper", which is its official slogan. Founded in 1900 as a shipping journal, it is the second-oldest Philippine newspaper, second only to The Manila Times. The Manila Bulletin is the Philippine's newspaper of record.
The newspaper was originally owned by a Swiss expatriate named Hans Menzi. Its name was changed from Bulletin Today on March 12, 1986.
On occasion the editorial policy of the Manila Bulletin has met objection from civil authorities. During World War II the newspaper's editor, Roy Anthony Cutaran Bennett, was imprisoned and tortured by the Japanese for his statements opposing the militarist expansion of the Japanese Empire. The Manila Bulletin survived the Martial law era of President Ferdinand Marcos for propaganda purposes.
The newspaper is owned by Filipino-Chinese business mogul Emilio Yap, who, aside from the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation (the paper's controlling company), also owns the Manila Hotel, Centro Escolar University and Euro-Phil Laboratories. The company has been listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange since 1990, and had revenues of approximately US$45 million in 2004. Besides its flagship it publishes two other daily tabloids, Tempo and Balita, as well as nine magazines such as the Philippine Panorama, Bannawag, Liwayway, Bisaya and a host of other journals in English, Tagalog, Cebuano and other Philippine languages.
The newspaper is regarded by many for being pro-administration regardless of whoever is in power and also for its optimistic and non-sensational journalism. To further enhance its image as a newspaper which presents positive news articles, the Bulletin recently introduced a new marketing tagline "There's good news here". In addition it maintains the oldest news web site in the Philippines.
On December 22, 2007, survey results by Nielsen Media Research "Nielsen Media Index Study (Enhanced Wave 2)," covering the whole year of 2007, showed that the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net) was the choice of 53% "of those who said they had read a broadsheet" with 1.3 million readers. Manila Bulletin came second with 47% (1.17 million readers), while the Philippine Star was third with 42% (1.05 million readers). Nielsen survey also showed that the Sunday Inquirer Magazine, led in its category, with 39% readership, Panorama came in second with 35%, while Starweek was third with 12%.[
Controversy
On June 5, 2008, a Filipino blogger sued the Bulletin for copyright infringement. The photo blogger had discovered that photos that he had taken and posted online had been used by the Manila Bulletin in its "Travel & Tourism" section of the March 21, 2007 issue. Apparently, the photographs had been altered and used by the newspaper without the original photographer's consent and without attribution or compensation. A month later, the newspaper filed a counter-suit against the blogger claiming "exemplary and moral damages". The Manila Bulletin claimed that its use (and alteration, creating derivative works) of the photographs constituted fair use.

Basic Principles

What is internet?

The internet reffered to as cyberspace,is a collection of local, regional, national, and international computer networks linked together to exchange data and distribute processing tasks. It is an interconnected network that uses the standard internet protocol suite(TCP/IP) to transport data.Individual networks are being managed by large computers which are then connected to the internet also know as the information highway.

What is Internet offers?
The internet was first developed when the research project of the US military agencies has been funded to build robust,fault-oriented,and distributed computer networksn

The Internet offers a vast set of resources w/c are useful to all users.
 Electronic Mail-email is the oldest internet service, dating back to mid 1970s.
 Information-any subject imaginable is available in the internet.
 Programs-thousands of free programs or freeware are available in the internet.
 Entertainment-different simple games are also available to be played on-line in the internet like poker etc.
 Discussion groups-the internet is capable of mediating discussion groups w/ similar interests.
 On-line Shopping-the internet offers a vast of resources in terms of providing services and selling goods.
Birth of the Internet
-The internet came into existence at the time of the cold war.
Internet Resources
-It is time to know how the internet works after we have learned how it began.
(NAPs)-networks access points
(TCP/IP)-transmission control protocol/internet protocol
Internet Connections
-A communication link must be established between a computer and the internet to fully benefit from it.
ADSL connections
-ADSL stands for asymmetric digital subscriber line connections w/ are becoming widely available tp provide an excellent internet connection.

These are the type of connection can be seen advertised in different speed specifications.
256kbps/128kbps

2mbps/512kbps
8mbps/1024kbps
Dial-up connection
-The earlier method of connecting to the internet is through a dial-up connection.
Cable connections
-This type of internet access is usually offered by cable companies to their consumers to have a faster internet connection by merely adding additional charges on their monthly bills.
High speed internet access
-Integrated services digital networks –(ISDN) is a digital transmission system used to transmit voice and datathrough copper telephone wires.
Internet services providers(ISP)
-In accessing the internet,an ISP is required to be connected to the internet backbone.
Factors in choosing an ISP
1) Geographical coverage
2) Type of service
3) Quality of service
4) Cost of equipment and installation
5) Extra services
6) Customer service

ELECTRICITY,MAGNETISM LIGHT

Electricity (from the New Latin ēlectricus, "amber-like"[a]) is a general term encompassing a variety of phenomena resulting from the presence and flow of electric charge. These include many easily recognizable phenomena, such as lightning and static electricity, but in addition, less familiar concepts, such as the electromagnetic field and electromagnetic induction.

Magnetism, a non-contact force, is a category of behavior of materials that respond at an atomic or subatomic level to an applied magnetic field. For example, the most well known form of magnetism is ferromagnetism such that some ferromagnetic materials produce their own persistent magnetic field. However, all materials are influenced to greater or lesser degree by the presence of a magnetic field. Some are attracted to a magnetic field (paramagnetism); others are repulsed by a magnetic field (diamagnetism); others have a much more complex relationship with an applied magnetic field. Substances that are negligibly affected by magnetic fields are known as non-magnetic substances. They include copper, aluminium, gases, and plastic.

The magnetic state (or phase) of a material depends on temperature (and other variables such as pressure and applied magnetic field) so that a material may exhibit more than one form of magnetism depending on its temperature, etc.

Light is electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength that is visible to the human eye (in a range from about 380 or 400 nanometres to about 760 or 780 nm).[1] In physics, the term light sometimes refers to electromagnetic radiation of any wavelength, whether visible or not.

Five primary properties of light are intensity, frequency or wavelength, polarization, phase and orbital angular momentum.

Light, which exists in tiny "packets" called photons, exhibits properties of both waves and particles. This property is referred to as the wave–particle duality. The study of light, known as optics, is an important research area in modern physics.

Refraction is the bending of light rays when passing from one transparent material to another. It is described by Snell's Law:

n_1\sin\theta_1 = n_2\sin\theta_2\ .

where θ1 is the angle between the ray and the normal in the first medium, θ2 is the angle between the ray and the normal in the second medium, and n1 and n2 are the indices of refraction, n = 1 in a vacuum and n > 1 in a transparent substance.

Interference (wave propagation)

In physics, interference is the addition (superposition) of two or more waves that results in a new wave pattern. Interference usually refers to the interaction of waves that are correlated or coherent with each other, either because they come from the same source or because they have the same or nearly the same frequency.

A mirror is an object with at least one reflective surface. The most familiar type of mirror is the plane mirror, which has a flat surface. Curved mirrors are also used, to produce magnified or diminished images or focus light or simply distort the reflected image.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the shadow of the earth. A lunar eclipse can last up to an hour and a half. During a lunar eclipse the moon may turn a reddish color. It is not dangerous at all to look at a lunar eclipse because the moon does not make its own light.

A Solar Eclipse occurs when the moon goes in front of the sun and blocks most of the sun's light from the earth. During a total eclipse all you can see from earth is a ring of light around the moon which is part of the sun the moon did not cover. It is dangerous to look at a solar eclipse directly, even if you have sun glasses or smoked glass. It is better to view solar eclipses through a pin hole projector.

A curved mirror is a mirror with a curved reflective surface, which may be either convex (bulging outward) or concave (bulging inward).A convex mirror, fish eye mirror or diverging mirror, is a curved mirror in which the reflective surface bulges toward the light source. Convex mirrors reflect light outwards, therefore they are not used to focus light.

A concave mirror, or converging mirror, has a reflecting surface that bulges inward (away from the incident light). Concave mirrors reflect light inward to one focal point, therefore they are used to focus light.

A real image of an object produces the same pattern of light as the object does somewhere in space. Some portion of the light from the real image reaches our detector along a straight-line path. The detector cannot distinguish between light coming from the object and light coming from the image. We interpret the same patterns in the same way.

A virtual image is the apparent position from which a pattern of light reaches our detector, if we make the assumption that it has traveled from its source to the detector along a straight-line path. Virtual images are formed when light from an object or from an image is reflected or bend on the way to the detector.

Mga Kuwento Ni Lola Basyang: Classic Tagalog Tales in Komiks
I have been re-reading old issues of the Liwayway recently, the oldest existing Tagalog magazine in the Philippines. I am a big fan of the Liwayway, especially the older issues from the prewar up to the early 1970s.

It's really hard nowadays to find vintage copies of old Liwayway. Like Tagalog komiks, Liwayway was very popular back then, but very few Filipinos managed to collect them; the old Liwayway copies have suffered the same fate of the old komiks: pambalot ng tinapa (dried fish wrapper).

I liked the Liwayway not only because I enjoyed the stories in it, but also because I learn so much from it, the most important of which is my understanding of the Tagalog language. I have a deep admiration for the Tagalog language, and by reading Liwayway, my own Tagalog communication skills are enriched.
Yesterday, while browsing an old copy of Liwayway, I found one of the classic anthologies in Tagalog literature: "Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang".
Don Severino Reyes, the famous Tagalog playwright of the early 1900s-who wrote the immortal "Walang Sugat" play- was the man behind the Lola Basyang stories.

"Ang Hari sa Bundok na Ginto" Tagalog Klasiks #7. Written by Severino Reyes, comics adaptation by Pedrito Reyes, illustrations by Jesus Ramos. Cover art by Maning De Leon.

Popularly known as Mang Binoy, Don Severino Reyes, was also the co-founder and editor of the Liwayway in 1923. The very first years of the Liwayway was a struggle, and there was scarcity of literature to include in its contents, so Mang Binoy created the "Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang" in 1925 as filler. He did not sign it with his name though because he thought it was unethical, while still serving as editor of the magazine.

And so Mang Binoy used the byline "Lola Basyang" after a friend's neighbor named Gervacia Guzman de Zamora, who was known as "Tandang Basyang". It was from her where Mang Binoy took the inspiration to create"Lola Basyang".

In real life, Tandang Basyang was described as an old bespectacled woman in baro't saya, seated in her famous silyon, and reading her timeless classic stories- dug from her ancient baul- to her fascinated grandchildren.

The grandchildren were more than eager to hear stories about faraway castles, heroic princes, lovely maidens, giants, and elves. Always, at the end of each story is a moral lesson to be learned.
The first story of the "Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang" was entitled ang "Plautin ni Periking", a wonderful story of a kindhearted kid who has a magical flute and flying carpet.

It was the first of the more than 400 "Lola Basyang" stories to have graced the Liwayway, and only discontinued because of Mang Binoy's death in 1942.

Ang Sirena sa Ilog Pasig. Tagalog Klasiks #5.

In 1949, Mang Binoy's son, Pedrito Reyes, decided to revive the "Lola Basyang" stories. Working on the original scripts of his father, Pedrito transformed Lola Basyang's stories into komiks form, appearing in the earliest isuues of the Tagalog Klasiks. The illustrations were done by Maning De Leon, Jesus Ramos, and later on Ruben Yandoc and Jess Jodloman.

Ang Sinsing na Tanso. Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang. Illustrated by Jess Jodloman.

The "Lola Basyang" stories became more popular with its komiks versions, because now, Filipinos can visualize the stories by means of the illustrations. Later on, in the early 1950s, based on the komiks versions, a succesful movie adaptation was created. Now, GMA Channel 7 is adapting the stories into a television series.

Well, that's just goes on to say that a classic never goes out of style.
And the Liwayway and "Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang" never will.

i was in grade III in 1979 when we moved to my uncle's abandoned house, among my finds there was an old book compilation of Mga Kuwento Ni Lola Basyang, i devoured it like a staple food, the best for me was about a likable conman Ciriaco in "Akong Ekit," i wonder how such a gem of a book got lost like innocence in my fleeting boyhood

Hello,

I am doing research on the Filipino comic book industry. I am having a hard time getting the information I need. Would you be able to answer a few questions?

1. How do the biggest comic books in the Philippines get published? Are there one or two main publishers in the Philippines? What are their names?
2.What are the names of the biggest comic book stores in the Philippines?
3. Do you have any suggestions about who I can talk to to learn more about the industry?

Thank you!! (my email address is karenmiles78@gmail.com)

Hi! your collection is great! you know, I want also to collect vintage komiks and magazines but not this time because I don't have job to support my plan. Anyway, why don't you try to collect all Lola Basyang Komiks strip and make an anthology then reprint it like what you did in reprinting of Kenkoy so anyone can enjoy it. the reason why i suggest it is that because now this day, Lola Basyang stories are being revive, it make a stage musical play by PETA, publishing it on an Aklat Adarna form for children and republishing a book. I hope you will grant my wish, tnx!

Hi, Dennis!

I remember my auntie giving us ripped up komiks pages of Liwayway since my mom really only read the komiks section and they would usually throw out the nobelas. Can you post some of my favorite Liwayway komiks series such as Phantom Manok and Benedicta. When I was still working at Star City, I would sometimes go to the CCP library where they have these old Liwayway copies bookbound. Hope you can accommodate my request.
